Cheltenham Races: Upsets and Big Payouts Shake Up Bookmakers

The Cheltenham Races have proven challenging for oddsmakers, with substantial payouts causing quite a stir.

Sky Bet allegedly suffered a loss of approximately £3 million (equivalent to $3.9 million!) on the very first contest, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. The unexpected victory came from Klassical Dream, a 6/1 longshot trained by the celebrated Willie Mullins. Further compounding Sky Bet’s troubles was their ongoing festival promotion, allowing patrons to place a “risk-free” wager of up to £20 on the opening race each day. In essence, if your chosen runner lost, you’d receive a refund. It appears many were feeling fortunate!

William Hill didn’t experience a much better outcome. They reportedly lost in the region of £2.2 million on the festival’s third day. The most significant hit stemmed from the unexpected loss of Paisley Park, a horse widely regarded as a guaranteed winner. A single substantial wager set William Hill back a cool £500,000. Ouch indeed.

Although Thursday witnessed victories by several favored contenders, potentially mitigating the damage for the industry, the prior losses underscore the inherently unpredictable nature of horse racing, and how a handful of surprise triumphs can truly disrupt the oddsmakers’ projections.
